I've bought and sold used equipment, both locally as well as over the internet in various ways (forums, ebay, shops, classifieds). I've had pretty good luck with everything so far, you just have to be careful, get as much detail as you can on it, pics, feedback about seller/buyer, stuff like that, communication is key. if you're buying from a store that sells used items, look up their reviews and reputation, good sellers will usually have good feedback (like KEH), scam sellers will have terrible feedback (like overstockdigital.com, or Axer products) also look out for fake feedback, some places will hire people to go around posting good feedback (axer does this) but they lock their feedback so that no real people can post feedback and if you look at feedback outside their site you'll see strongly terrible reviews (axer is a company that sells complete POS """lenses""" that aren't worth the cost of the box they're in, but they put ridiculous MSRP prices on them like $700-900 and use their fake "reviews" and """"sale"""" prices of like 40-50% off their insane MSRP to lure people who don't know better into buying them them)

a little bit of research and being careful goes a long way.

Very good. I've only bought one used lens and it was on Craigslist nice young lady up on campus had it. I met her in person and had my camera there so I was able to test the lens myself. It was a good transaction. There are not to many lenses on Craigslist around here and we don't have a local camera shop.
