    American Marten

A couple American Marten photos. These guys are surprisingly tame for a mustelid (much easier to work with than that Mink I posted earlier)!

This one was photographed not to far from my house, out near a bunch of bird feeders in the woods. My guess is he was trying to get the red squirrels and red-backed voles hanging around there. These are their two favourite prey species up hear in the boreal.

Here's a second one I saw at a park just outside Winnipeg, I was alerted to it by some calling magpies, whom he did not seem very fond of.

A marten is a mustelid, which is the weasel family. Same family as badgers, otters, wolverines. They're in the carnivore family just like dogs and cats.

I've never seen those around anywhere, they look like a ferret almost.

Same family as a ferret. They're more or less a boreal forest animal. Very well adapted for tree life.

No they aren't really a problem. They're actually quite shy, and not generally seen near humans, they prefer remote woods. I think the second one was only in the park because of all the red squirrels around.

took a look at their habitat map, looks like they live mostly up north in Canada, and a few spots in the northern US.
