    oh, I didn't know the 'vest' was an indicator of the rough legs. thats good to know. we get a fair amount of rough legged hawks out here in the winter, but there is a short window where many similar species are all found in the same areas (ferrunginous, rough legged, red tail, swainson's) so images that I take during those times are more difficult for me since I know when I should see what in my area, but I've seen ferrunginous and rough legs and red tails all on the same road, same day, at the same time, all within ~1-2 miles total.

    if there wasnt such a vast variety of morphs, and variations in juvi vs adult vs species, I'd be a lot better at this...hehe but the variety does make things interesting. for example, during our local bird festival this last year, a small group of us spotted a partial Leucistic red-tail, we couldn't get close enough for images (private land), but we watched it through the spotting scope. it even took the biologists who specialize in raptors that were with us a little bit to make a proper ID on it...

    Female is identifiable by her second chest band which is a reddish colour.
