    Shooting in confined areas.

I'm planning to shoot at the trucks show on the 27th. I'm wondering about a wide angle lens. The show is indoors and I'm worried I won't be able to get my shot with my 35mm.

35 may be too long for indoors car show on a crop sensor. I'm usually around 28-35mm at car shows on a full frame body, the same field of view would be around 18-25mm on a crop body. larger vehicles would be at the shorter end of that range too.

Sigh. I need more money lol. What lens would you recommend I replace my 18-55 3.5-5.6 with. I'd like something a little faster with better optics.

on a DX body, I'd look at the new sigma 18-35 f1.8...I used to shoot with my 24-70f2.8 at shows, but since I don't need 36mp for web publishing, I sold my 24-70, and use the sigma in DX mode, it gives me similar field of view of ~27-53mm at 16mp which is where I am at 75% of the time at shows, plus its a full 1 1/3 stop faster than the 24-70 which helps because indoor show lighting is TERRIBLE, and the optics on the sigma are excellent (it actually has better CA control than the 24-70 does, and is equally as sharp, if not sharper at times than the 24-70...however it is not a FX lens, so its really only useful in DX mode, if I go in FX mode with it, the image circle doesn't cover the whole frame)...with that and my 70-200, that's usually all I need for show coverage.

when I'm covering a show or event its almost always the 18-35 f1.8 and the 70-200 f2.8...

when I'm out shooting stuff for fun or practice, OR any scheduled photoshoot (like shooting a specific truck, or something, not covering an event) its always primes...

I'm more of a prime-guy than a zoom-guy. but zooms do have their place such as at an event with limited space.

if you need more range than 18-35, then Nikon's 17-55 f2.8 is a great lens (costs about the same used as the 18-35 does new), it's also DX though, Nikon's older 17-35 f2.8 is a good FX lens, as is the newer 16-35 f4 VR lens (between Nikon's 17-35 and 16-35, the 16-35 has better optics, but is a full stop slower, but with VR, so it's kindof a tradeoff)...otherwise the 24-70 is still king of the FX land 'normal' zooms...I hear the new Tamron 24-70 f2.8 is a really good FX option too, and less expensive.

I'm going to stay dx for probably 2 years or better so a dx lens is fine

and even when you do move to FX, you can still shoot in DX mode like I do sometimes. there are some benefits to it. smaller file sizes, less MP when you don't need high mp, focus points that go all the way out to the edge of the image frame....its a handy option to have. some FX bodies even give you faster shooting when in DX mode. when you read specs sometimes it'll say like 4fps FX and 6fps DX....meaning high speed burst shooting is improved when in DX mode. not all bodies have that improvement though.

yup. but definitely look at the siggy 18-35 f1.8 Art...I think its $799 new...though its pretty new so most places are backordered I think. I kindof got lucky when I got mine.
