    Sigma 50mm 1.4 art

So who had this (EDIT $950) prime tank on their purchase list for 2014.
It's rumored that it has (shake reduction)(vr)(is) whatever you line to call it. Also is said to be so sharp you can get a paper cut just from looking at the lcd screen. Now that's sharp! Ok maybe I'm the only one saying that but a lot of the reviews are raving about how tac sharp the 50mm 1.4 is while wide open.
I'm very excited and when I go to add a 50mm to my list of lenses this will be the one.

Let me know what you think.

a little bit off on the specs. its already released, I'd love one but just can't justify the price for a 50mm, I don't use 50mm too much personally.

    http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-311306-5...dp/B00ICJWP6S/

it doesn't have VR/OS/etc. its also $950, but it is competing with the $4000 Zeiss 55mm f1.4 Otus lens and doing a pretty good job in optical quality/sharpness/etc. I believe the Zeiss has a slight edge, but at less than 1/4 the price, its like 95% the performance...and it has AF which the zeiss doesnt.

the sigma would definitely be the 50mm I'd get if I was in the market for one right now.

I was reading earlier postings about it and someone said it had OS. I was looking at the older EX version when I saw the $499 price.
$4000 really and if I read right it doesn't have AF. ?

The Zeiss? Yeah its $4k. But its the best of the best of the best. No Zeiss lenses for Nikon or canon have AF. I'm interested to see how testing goes for the 50mm art once it is more available.

*brace yourself for a long story*

So, with everything going on recently I've got to sell a bunch of stuff, like duplicate focal lengths and stuff, and downsize my gear....pay off bills, etc.

So, I've already sold my 85 f1.8, and I'm just waiting for payment on my 135 f2.0, and I'm going to post my 105 f2.5 soon.

basically I'm going to keep my 21 and 35 primes for my wide range, keep my 70-200 for the mild tele range, and my 500 for super tele range.

however I've got this gap from 35 to 70 encompassing the entire normal range of focal lengths. so with a little bit of the money I'm getting from selling all this stuff, I'm going to grab a 50mm to fill that gap, and I'll be pretty set with lenses for quite a while....and I might as well get the best 50mm I can get (without spending $4k for an Otus)....so I think I'm going to grab a 50mm 1.4 Art...

whatcha think? I'll have to post some sample pics when I get it. I've been reading about it and everything I find is just phenominal...even more-so than the 35 Art...which I love

check this review out. this is looking at ~50mm lenses ranging from under $1000, to over $11,000

    http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2014...es-version-0-7

The sigma basically matches the Zeiss wide open, but stopped down 1 stop to f2.0 the art pulls ahead, significantly. and I believe this is on something like a Canon 5DmkIII, I'm looking forward to seeing what it does on the higher resolution on the D800E...according to DxOmark tests, some lenses get quite a bit better on the E version vs the 800 non-E....

of course both the Zeiss and Sigma are a little bit behind the Leica f2.0, but that guy is $7000, and can't be (easily) put on any canon or nikon body...and the sigma has autofocus...

I'm looking forward to trying this out.

Awesome, I can't wait to see how it does. Though I have no doubt that it will be tack sharp in every way. I do love my 35mm 1.4
