    fine tuning my 300

So recently I sold my 500f4 and downgraded back to a 300f2.8 to pay some bills, I also grabbed one of the new Nikon 1.4xIII teleconverters...I'm going to take it all to work and fine tune it all during my break and take the scenic route home to see if I can get some raptors in the morn...hopefully I'll have some pics to post tomorrow. from the looks of things this new teleconverter is pretty good, the old one was fairly good but they seem to have improved on this one a bit...I'm waiting for a new version of the 1.7X converter to get released too...

right now its 300 f2.8 bare lens, and 420mm f4 with the TC, with minimal IQ loss if any. with the 1.7x its 500mm f4.5, but even though the old 1.7x was decent it did have some IQ loss, so with the new 1.4x being released recently, and the 2.0xIII from a couple years back, I'm hoping the 1.7 is up for a refresh.

Oh cool. I am planning to fine tune my equipment once I get my new body.
I would love a (How to) on fine tuning please post more details as you go.

The 300mm F2.8 is for sure on my list.

yeah, fine tuning can help a decent amount, especially with faster lenses. I'd like to do a how to on it sometime. some bodies don't have the ability to fine tune, but typically the higher end consumer ones do as well as all the pro and semi-pro bodies.

the 300 2.8 is fantastic, its ideal to get the actual focal length you need without teleconverters, but with a lens like the 300 f2.8 you get a bit more flexability, for example, you can use teleconverters to get a 300 f2.8 up to 500mm, granted it might not be QUITE what a 500 f4 would be, but it'll work, and do well, but no matter what you do, you can't make a 500 f4 into a 300mm lens.

my ideal lens I'd like to get is the new 400 f2.8FL lens. its phenominal, it weighs only 8 lbs (a little lighter than the 500 f4, but the old 400 f2.8 VR lens weighed over 10lbs! so although it was a fantastic lens, it was just too heavy and off-balance with the body to reliably use hand-held for any more than a couple shots, a 8lb lens with the weight better distributed is much more functionally hand-held. like the 500 f4)...the 300 f2.8 is nice too at ~6lbs and well balanced.

I kinda want to shoot some sports for fun. I think the 300mm F2.8 would perform great for the tight shots.

yeah, the 300 f2.8 is one of the staples for sports shooting, that and the 400 f2.8 are basically what all the pros use, if you look at the sidelines of a pro sports game (NFL, NBA, etc) that's what you'll see them using. the guys shooting from up in the stands are probably using 600 f4's on monopods, but the 300/400 f2.8's are on the sidelines catching the action.

well, didn't get much in the way of raptors, got a possibly decent shot of a finch taking off though, I'll process it and make a new thread.

What tool do you use for fine tuning? I'm looking at the datacolor tool.

datacolor tool? not sure what that is, I'm doing focus tests at various AF tune values and setting it in there (or in the sigma dock)
