    point and shoot cameras

So my wife had asked for a point and shoot camera for Christmas. She is not savvy enough to figure out a DSLR (heck I'm really not). I said to her what's the point when your phone (galaxys5) has a decent camera in it and its always in your pocket. Just wanted to gather your guys opinion on this matter.

    I'll try this again.
I purchased a Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm VR Lens to carry around in the truck. Just leave it in auto mode and it focuses fast and takes better pictures than any cell phone I have seen. One problem with cell phone cameras is by the time they focus, there's a good change the kid or animals you are shooting are a half a block away, so you will loose a lot of action shots.
I believe it was about 359 at best buy last year.

Thanks for the input. She currently has one but its a few years old. The battery is no good any more and the XD memory cards it uses are now obsolete and hard to find. I dont feel its worth putting the money into getting what it needs and Id be better off to replace it

yeah getting something to replace it would be best, a beginner DSLR like F5 mentioned is a great idea. they're relatively small, and could easily be used to grow with as she improves.

however the big ? is what's the budget you're looking at. there are some good P&S cameras too, but typically the good P&S ones will be just as expensive as a lower end DSLR which will still be quite a step up in quality and usability, but the P&S will definitely be smaller, so it's kindof a 'what's most important for you' thing.

She wanted something to just leave in her purse and I don't have a lot of budget to work with right now. Unless someone gives me a huge check its probably not going to happen. But I can still try and get her one later and be more educated on what to get

cool, yeah sounds like a point and shoot would be best then. you might look for a used or refurbished Canon S100, they're kindof one of the better point and shoots, they've been upgraded, but the S100 is still a good one, and used/refurb I think they'd be under $200 (the new versions are like $400-500)...and it has some good features that will let her grow with it if she wants too, like I think it can be put in manual mode and adjust the settings to some extent.

you should get what's best for you, I prefer Nikon when it comes to DSLR's, but if I were getting a point and shoot, it'd probably be a canon. go to the store and test some out see what you like.
