    Teleconverter

How do I tell the older nikkor 1.X converter from the newer version.

I remember Aloicious talking about nikkor coming out with newer versions of the telephoto converters.

there's a bunch of different versions through the years, the most recent ones are the:

TC-14EIII - 1.4X newest one of them all
TC-17EII - 1.7x due for an update but the II is the current one
    TC-20EIII - 2.0x been out a couple years

the ones that just recently came out were sigma ones, but they're mainly for use on sigma lenses only.

the 1.4x III one is the really new one from Nikon, came out last year and has the most updated coatings/lenses, etc...but the version II is also very good.

there are a bunch of really old ones too, but the ones listed above are really the only ones I'd be looking into if you're wanting to get one. but remember every teleconverter will cost you lens speed, 1 stop, 1.5 stops, or 2 stops (i.e. an f2.8 lens becomes an f4 on a 1.4x teleconverter, it becomes a f4.8 on a 1.7x converter, and it becomes a f5.6 on a 2x)

Just to help, I was asking about the teleconverters because I had thought about getting a 70-200 vrll and using a 1.4 or 1.7 with it to get a longer reach.
Now that I see the prices I dint think that is the best route.
I'll soon make a thread concerning this.

yeah, on 200mm it can make a little difference but its not tons and where the cost of the teleconverter is like 1/4 to 1/3 the cost of the lens, where they really shine is the supertelephoto fast lenses like the 300 f2.8, 400f2.8, etc...with those the cost of the lens differences in thousands of dollars, so they can be a very economical way to get from 300 to say 400/500/600 without needing another mortgage.

Lol, yes that's what I was noticing. After looking into the teleconverters I don't think it makes since to purchase one for a 200mm. But if I had a 300mm F2.8 I would consider it.

yeah, I've had my 70-200 longer than I've had my 300 f2.8/etc. and I tried the 1.4x on it before I got the longer lenses and just wasn't ever overly impressed, with the 70-200 I'd rather keep the speed and crop in some if I need to...probably the most useful one for the 70-200 is the 2x, which would make it a 140-400mm but at f5.6...but I've never owned the 2x TC so I can't tell you from firsthand experience.

you can get some of the TC's on the used market for a pretty good price. except maybe they newest 1.4x EIII, since its so new there isn't a huge used market on them, but if you look around I bet you could find the others for somewhere in the 250-350 range.

I'm not overly worried about the F/5.6 because most of my wildlife is shot in bright day light.
