    M.Zuiko ED 14-150mm f4.0-5.6

What's your opinion on a lens with this much variation? It was highly recommend by the guy at a shop I went to today. http://www.getolympus.com/us/en/lens...5-6-black.html
I like the idea of one size fits most but not sure if its the best option. I'm also noticing that Olympus lenses don't seem to be much faster than that. The guy also said that on a 4/3 body that a 300 is equivalent to a 600mm zoom lens. Does that make any sense?

those lenses are typically called 'superzooms' because they cover such a wide range. they're a mixed bag, while they are very convinient, they're make lots of compromises with image quality and light gathering ability. though that may not bother you much depending on what you're using it for.

ignore the 600mm equivalency stuff he was telling you, its misleading and not correct the way he's trying to explain it. there's a post around here somewhere where Steve and I are talking about that...its typically called a 'crop factor', and it does exist and has some useage, but its not an easy X equals Y conversion, and it depends on what 2 pieces of equipment you're comparing and their individual specs, so don't listen to salesmen who are trying to oversimplify it to the point of being incorrect just to make a sale. that lens is a 14-150mm period, its not equivalent to a 300 or 600 or anything else, so its not worthwile to compare it that way....sorry but the BS that salesmen spout sometimes is a real pet peeve of mine.

Here's that thread I mentioned that steve and I are talking about crop factors in, it gets kindof technical so ask questions if something doesn't make sense.

It was something to do with 35mm film crap witch I don't understand anyway.

That was the lens he told me to get as a "starter kit" I have to admit it sounds like a great starter and priced at I think 500 with 100 off of you buy a body with it

yeah, thats the crop sensor stuff, he's comparing the smaller micro 4/3 sensor to a full size 35mm sensor and claming that because the sensor is smaller, the lens functions like a different focal length, but he's wrong, it doesn't its just a smaller sensor, recording less information. don't get hung up on the 'equivalent focal length' stuff, its confusing, and most fo the time explained incorrectly.

that lens is probably a decent all around one. and for just general use I'm sure it'll be fine.

OK I remember that thread but was confused as hell.

This lens was just highly recommend and while it isnt the pro line they offer it is better built than the starter lenses. I can't believe plastic mounting rings on some of them. Wish I had more money for lenses as they offer pretty sweet deals on them when you buy with a body

yeah, its like learning to tune, at the beginning its like learning a new language, and steep learning curve, but with practice it gets easier to understand.

photography is one of those things that you can get extremely good at but never master it your whole life...

thats one thing that makes it fun for me, continual progression, you're never sitting stagnant unless you don't practice.
