    Baltimore Oriole

One of two oriole species we have here, the other being the Orchard Oriole. Orioles in the Americas are actually the same family as our blackbirds (grackles, cowbirds, red-winged blackbirds, meadowlarks, etc), not to be confused with the Old World Orioles (Oriolus) which are closer relatives of crows.

On Saturday May 21, 2016, I finally got the Baltimore Oriole pics I have been dying to get for a couple years now. The problem with orioles is that despite being brightly coloured birds, they are really difficult to spot in the canopy, so most of the time you are birding by ear.

After about 20-25 mins of searching and running between his favourite trees, I got some fantastic views. My brother was not as impressed, he doesn't have my enthusiasm about the avian world but still did some birding while I did some oriole chasing. Definitely worth it!

Now next on my list is the less common Orchard Oriole…and next spring the Jamaican Oriole
