    Zeiss 55mm f1.4 Otus announced

So Zeiss announced a 55mm f1.4 APO Distagon lens today, supposed to be as close to perfect as you can get, optically speaking its supposed to be as flawless as possible, super sharp even wide open corner to corner all the way down to f1.4...sounds pretty good right?....now the kicker...list price is $3999.99, and it weights 2.5 lbs! http://www.adorama.com/ZI5514ZE.html...FZBAMgodSGoAJw

I'd love to try one, but honestly a I think $4k is a bit excessive for a normal 55mm manual focus only f1.4 lens....while I LOVE zeiss lenses, they're VERY well made, and perform VERY well with excellent contrast and sharpness. I just don't see the justification on that price regardless of how well corrected it is...especially since they have a great 50mm f1.4 available for $725 already...http://www.adorama.com/ZI5014PTZF2.html

who knows though, maybe this new lens will be focused towards cinema use, since cinema lenses are notoriously expensive (even though it's being released in Nikon and canon mounts, so I don't know)

Yes, expensive, but put it into perspective I paid more for a Weatherby Ultramark 300 WBY Mag with a 40x 45mm Leupold scope/

haha for sure! it I'm interested to how the newly announced Nikon 58mm f1.4G will compare to the Otus, both are supposed to be very corrected lenses.

So, I've seen some real life shots from the 55 Otus, and they're phenominal, the way the lens renders is just out of this world. Zeiss says that the 55mm is just the first in the Otus series...I'd love to see a ~28mm f1.4 Otus....or something like a 16mm f2.0 Otus...

Roger from Lensrentals.com calls the otus "the absolute best SLR lens in the world today"

and check out this guy's gallery of Otus shots, this one is a 100% crop from a D4 sensor...
